Why our 190gsm 42” GSM Satin Photo Paper Rolls provide consistent high quality results.

A lot of science goes into making high quality photo paper. A prerequisite for outstanding performance is a high quality ink receiver layer which ensures ink hitting the surface is accurate and stays where it is supposed to be. This is vital if you wish to print photo quality images, fine details and smooth half tones. Traditional toner based printers use paper that typically have a very flat surface (giving a flat image) unlike high quality instant dry satin papers where the surface is made up of tens of thousands of tiny pyramids. Problems such as metamerism or bronzing occur when a lower performance paper is unable to withstand heavy ink saturation when the droplets of ink bleed into one another. This results in colours appearing to shift under different lighting conditions or small colour variations being lost completely.

Our 190 gram 42” 1067mm X 30m satin photo paper delivers equally good results with dye based or pigmented inks. If you require your photo quality prints to be fade resistant we would always suggest using pigmented (see our HP Z range of machines) where there is no compromise on quality but all the benefits of an ink designed to look as vibrant years into the future. Tonal quality and dynamic colour accuracy will be exceptionally strong making our satin photo rolls ideal for proofing.

Paper testing – as thorough as it gets.

We commit high levels of investment into print machines to try and produce outstanding prints for our customers but without high quality paper results are less than impressive. We have 13 inkJet printers across our four print operations in the North West and have tested a number of different 190 gsm 42” papers and have found SIHL's Rocket Photo paper to be outstanding.

When you buy a from a specialist print company like Entwistle Group that actually relies on the products it sells customers can be assured that their 190gsm 42” satin white photo paper rolls is the best in the market place. Very few of our competitors actually print or even test the paper they sell.

How Inkjet printing has come to rival film

When digital printers first appeared, if there was one frustration, it was their inability to produce photo-realistic prints. Since then, the challenge for inkjet engineers has been to create a printer whose results would be comparable to those achieved by photographers who print from film negatives, something that involves a totally different printing technique.

For photographers, when they develop photographic film they use a variety of chemicals and the resultant prints are made up of areas of completely solid colour, or black and white.

The basics of InkJet technology and the importance of paper

Inkjet technology works differently as it uses micro nozzles and ink to apply tightly packed coloured dots onto paper. If greatly magnified, small areas of white can be seen in between each dot, but in reality, when we look at such a digital print our eyes compensate by joining all the dots together so that the areas of white become totally imperceptible, thus creating the effect of a solid colour.

From a mechanically technical aspect, the advances in technology now see printers which can apply many, many thousands of these dots in one square inch (DPI) and thus greatly reducing areas of white. The result is a digital print which looks so much more like a genuine photograph.

However, ink alone cannot achieve such impressive results. The role of paper in the digital printing process is just as critical. Using a high-quality satin or gloss photo paper enables more ink to be applied and it will also be absorbed more quickly, thus eliminating any bleed (no fuzzy edges).
